@bejohnson

Have you ever walked out into the rain wishing there was something protecting you from the elements? Over the past few years, techwear has been emerging as the go-to style for form and function. While other fashion styles cater solely to how a garment looks on the body, techwear focuses on design, material choice, innovation, and utility.

While the style has been around for quite some time, it is becoming more of a mainstream fit within the past year. As a high-end product, it comes with high-end prices. You’ll find many pieces inspired by Japanese streetwear, architecture, is often avant-garde. The biggest name in techwear is Acronym, with apparel ranging in the thousands of dollars.

Techwear merges streetwear with functionality. Waterproof fabrics and Gore-Tex are top choices in materials, while also focusing on a futuristic aesthetic. The style is mainly adorned by men, however, women have been emerging into the scene and making the style theirs. Along with the signature face masks, you’ll find a vast amount of accessories including harnesses, bags, and lots of buckles.

“To me techwear is empowerment. When I put on my gear, I feel like my complete self. I feel like I can take on the world. Techwear helps me express myself. I feel powerful and unstoppable in techwear.”

“My close friends have been into techwear for awhile. They were buying Acronym but I’m still a student. Even ACG is pretty pricey retail.

To me, techwear is significant because it has functionality. My favorite is really the carrying straps. I hate having to hold jackets so it’s just really convenient.

I want to say Jennifer Bin is easily my biggest inspiration, but I liked her photos too before I realized she was into techwear.”

“Techwear to me doesn’t just mean being an urban ninja. It’s different for everyone, but my definition would be that it’s something fun for me to do. Whether it be functionality or fashion, it’s something different than what you’d see or expect, not something you see on a daily basis. I love the fact that you can mix streetwear pieces into it, and throw something in it to make it your own. It makes it unique to you, and helps set you apart.”
